Hoodlum Feature in Lexicon, 30.7.2002
| "This issue we present the first in our special limited edition mix covermount CDs. Kicking off proceedings is rising DJ Hoodlum on the ones and twos, here’s a little about him… Hoodlum’s (real name Stuart) first introduction to DJing was through a mate’s decks which saw vinyl of the R&B and hip hop kind pass through. Encouraged to learn beat mixing at first with two Soul II Soul ‘Back To Life’ records on this same friends Soundlab’s belt drives the DJ soon to become known as Hoodlum was hooked. About six months later and now committed to the cause Stuart splashed out on a pair of Technics’ turntables and away he went. In 1992 a record shop opened up just down the road from Stuart who was then and now still lives in Watford. Till this day Stuart has been running the drum and bass division in the predominantly garage orientated Freedom Records. You can find a welcoming and dedicated Stuart behind the counter of Freedom seven days a week, yes that includes Sundays as well! Since Stuart’s first play in 1994 at the Tudor Rose in Southall, he’s been a regular One Nation DJ and has enjoyed playing at a lot of the recent Innovation parties, the next one being December 1st. In around 1995 Stuart managed to hook up his first pirate radio station slot on Kingston’s Dream FM. From there he progressed on to City Sounds radio where he would meet some invaluable friends namely Skibadee and Paul Roast. With the help of his then girlfriend Julie, Stuart started to build up his CV of both club and radio plays by doing a lot of hyping and mailing out mix demos. In 1996 with a little help from both Skibadee and Wildchild Stuart managed to secure a place on the original Kool FM in London. Stuart has been raving about his trip to the States that he took recently. This was a solo tour arranged through an American customer to Freedom, Stuart was able to take in dates around Florida including Orlando, Jacksonville, Daytona and Gainsville and relinquishes the prospect of doing more travelling in the future so any promoters in Australia or Hong Kong especially who are reading this you know what to do! Looking ahead to NYE and Stuart will be taking a week out to Bulgaria which an MC friend Jay Da Flex has arranged from his visit to the country last summer. Stuart is honoured to play the midnight set and is looking to get some snowboarding action in leading up to the night. But there’s no time to play after the set as Stuart has to jet back for Kool’s ten anniversary New Year’s day event at the Astoria. Crammed full of DJs for the night Stuart will be playing one of the sought after sixty minute slots in the second room later in the evening. Stuart has also just been given the go-ahead to re-launch the dormant K Power label that was set up by Kool FM boss Eastman in 1996. The label wound down a year later with just four releases under its belt by the likes of Brockie, Swift and Ital. Stuart feels that it was too good an opportunity to pass up with the reputation that the label had already ascertained. Expect the first release by Hostile, Dose and himself which will be in all good record stores from march and the one after that from Movement resident Ruffstuff. You can tune in to Stuart between the hours of 1 to 3, late Saturday / early Sunday on Kool FM at 94.5 to 94.6 and don’t forget if you live outside of London you can check him live on the net through pyrotechnicradio.com who broadcast Kool continually throughout the weekend. DJ Hoodlum would like to big up: Brockie, Eastman, Susie G, Kool FM massive, Flex, Dose, Hostile, his mum and dad, Ed Solo, Crazy B and Ruffstuff." | Hostile, Dose & Hoodlum – Reality Check/Fever (K-Power), 26.7.2002 |
The world famous Kool FM re-launches its own K-Power label with some fresh new talent for the ’02. First up is two fresh slices from up and coming producer Hostile. Already with some big labels chasing after this wicked new talent, Hostile comes correct with two dirty pieces of drum & bass for the streets. “Reality Check” has already been receiving some serious attention thanks to massive play from Pyrotechnic and Kool FM DJ’s. With it’s rolling drum and percussion and grimey bass line, this one rolls out in a hard, ruffneck fashion. On the flip “Fever” keeps things on a militant flava, with its solid bass, drum workout and lively dancefloor groove. Nu Urban
Hostile, Dose & Hoodlum – Reality Check/Fever (K-Power), 26.7.2002
New release from label spin off of the great Kool FM pirate. Yup, that’s right, it’s a goodie. We’ve got ourselves one of those stomping smelly sea-monsters that everyone loves a good knees-up to. Simple semi-warping bassline slurps and catches you like a river current between your legs. Dope and vicious, instant appeal. Frenetic late-for-work beats hurry along and are guaranteed to get a low crowd higher. DJ, July 02 (****1/2)
